The whole purpose of the death penalty is basically to prevent the convicted of doing the serious crime again, this is why only the serial killers and other high risk crimes that are harmful to the public. A "suspected serial killer" by the name of Gary Micheal Hilton was convicted and sentenced to death for the beheading of a 46-year-old Cheryl Dunlap about 3-4 years ago. Hilton was definetly harmful to the public seeing that he completely dismembered one victim and murder 3 others. He had already plead guilty to the one murder and when he was found guilty of the others, but he got lucky and somehow avoided the death penalty.
Though after Hiltons defense lawyer tried getting him off by explaining to the judge of his horrible childhood with the emotional abuse and drug abuse, another female went missing and was found murdered and for this Hilton was then found guilty once again and eventually was sentence to death by injection.
Personally I feel that Hilton should have gotten sentence to death to begin with because he was scene as a threat to the public. Though he had a horrible childhood, I feel it is no excuse for what he has done and that he was basically getting in return what he did to those women.
